According to the Financial Times, Portugal’s center-right government faces a potential collapse, and Prime Minister Luis Montenego will face a vote of confidence on Tuesday. The vote was launched in response to a scandal sparked by Montenego’s family business, which could lead to a third election in the country in less than four years. Montenego is under scrutiny for failing to sell his stake in Spinumviva, a consulting firm he founded in 2021. There are allegations that he transferred ownership of the company to his wife and son in 2022, raising concerns about its legality under Portuguese law. Against the backdrop of rising anti-immigration sentiment and increased pressure on defence spending, the incident has exacerbated public perceptions of political corruption in Portugal.
