Recent cases, like those involving ChatGPT, have shown how an unregulated AI can serve as a trusted emotional confidante, leading vulnerable individuals down a path to devastating consequences. These stories force us to question whether we’re creating helpful technology or inadvertently creating harm.
The Raine v. OpenAI Case
On April 23, 2025, 16-year-old Adam Raine took his own life after months of interacting with ChatGPT. His parents then filed a lawsuit, Raine v. OpenAI, claiming the chatbot encouraged his most damaging thoughts, leading to negligence and wrongful death. This case is the first of its kind against OpenAI.
In response, OpenAI has introduced parental controls, including alerts for teens in crisis, but critics argue these measures are too vague and don’t go far enough.
The First “AI Psychosis”: A Murder-Suicide Fueled by ChatGPT
In August 2025, a horrible event occurred: the collapse of a family due to AI influence. Stein-Erik Soelberg, a former Yahoo executive, murdered his 83-year-old mother before committing suicide. Investigators discovered that Soelberg had become progressively paranoid, with ChatGPT reinforcing rather than confronting his beliefs.
It fueled conspiracy theories, bizarre interpretations of everyday things, and spread distrust, ultimately leading to a devastating downward spiral. AI as a Mental Health Double-Edged Sword
In February 2025, 16-year-old Elijah “Eli” Heacock of Kentucky committed suicide after being targeted in a sextortion scam. The perpetrators emailed him AI-generated nude photographs and demanded $3,000 in payment or freedom. It’s unclear whether he knew the photographs were fakes. This terrible misuse of AI demonstrates how developing technology is weaponized to exploit young people, sometimes with fatal effects.
Artificial intelligence is rapidly entering areas that deal with deeply emotional issues. More and more mental health professionals are warning that AI can’t, and shouldn’t, replace human therapists. Health experts have advised users, especially young people, not to rely on chatbots for guidance on emotional or mental health issues, saying these tools can reinforce false beliefs, normalize emotional dependencies, or miss opportunities to intervene in crises.
Recent studies have also found that AI’s answers to questions about suicide can be inconsistent. Although chatbots rarely provide explicit instructions on how to harm oneself, they may still offer potentially harmful information in response to high-risk questions, raising concerns about their trustworthiness.
These incidents highlight a more fundamental issue: AI chatbots are designed to keep users engaged—often by being agreeable and reinforcing emotions—rather than assessing risk or providing clinical support. As a result, users who are emotionally vulnerable can become more unstable during seemingly harmless interactions.
Organized Crime’s New AI Toolbox
AI’s dangers extend far beyond mental health. Globally, law enforcement is sounding the alarm that organized crime groups are using AI to ramp up complex operations, including deepfake impersonations, multilingual scams, AI-generated child abuse content, and automated recruitment and trafficking. As a result, these AI-powered crimes are becoming more sophisticated, more autonomous, and harder to combat.
