Trump urges Hamas to accept a 60-day "final proposal" for a ceasefire in Gaza.
Gate News bot reported that, according to Reuters, U.S. President Donald Trump urged Iranian-backed Hamas militants on Tuesday to agree to what he called a "final proposal," which is a 60-day ceasefire with Israel in the Gaza Strip, to be mediated by officials from Qatar and Egypt. Trump stated on social media that his representatives had "long and productive" talks with Israeli officials regarding the Gaza issue.
He did not disclose specific information about his representation, but U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Vice President JD Vance were originally scheduled to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's senior advisor Ron Dermer. Trump stated that Israel has agreed to the terms of a 60-day ceasefire agreement, "During this period, we will work with all parties to end the war." He said that representatives from Qatar and Egypt would present a "final proposal" to Hamas. "I hope that for the interests of the Middle East, Hamas can accept this agreement, as the situation will not improve - it will only worsen. Thank you for your attention to this matter!" he said. Earlier that day, Trump told reporters that he hoped Israel and Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip could reach a ceasefire and hostage exchange agreement next week. He is scheduled to meet with Netanyahu at the White House on Monday. Hamas stated that it is willing to release the remaining hostages in Gaza and open a new tab to end the war, regardless of any agreements reached. Israel, on the other hand, stated that the war can only end if Hamas disarms and disbands. Hamas refuses to lay down its weapons. According to Israeli statistics, the trigger for the Gaza war was the attack by Hamas-led militants on Israel on October 7, 2023, resulting in 1,200 deaths and the abduction of 251 hostages.
