Germany reduces silver content in its coins by 46% as it has become too expensive.
Germany announced that it will reduce the silver content in the 35 and 50 euro commemorative coins due to fluctuations in precious metal prices and an attempt to curb speculation, according to the Ministry of Finance.
The 35 euro coin will contain 46% less silver, with a weight of 17 grams after previously being 18 grams, with a higher amount of copper added.
Officials said the goal of this move is to prevent the coins from tracking metal prices or becoming too costly to produce.
