⏺Iran could cause a digital catastrophe by cutting underwater cables in the Strait of Hormuz and disconnecting Persian Gulf countries from the internet
The Tasnim Agency, close to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, published a map of the cables and warned: in the event of natural disasters, ship anchoring, or deliberate actions, cutting the cables would cause a digital collapse in Arab states of the Persian Gulf.
Seven major cables lie on the seabed of the strait (Falcon, AAE-1, TGN-Gulf, SEA-ME-WE), transmitting huge volumes of data and connecting regional countries to data centers in the Middle East, Europe, and Asia. The cables run in Omani waters, not Iranian.
In the event of a break, Iran would also be affected, but less so: the country is not as dependent on them. Iranian officials have not officially commented, but this should be seen as a threat.
