Ethereum
In the world of crypto, Ethereum is the source of innovation, where DeFi, NFTs, Layer 2, and numerous new technologies were created. One of its co-founders, Vitalik Buterin, is a key opinion leader in the crypto world. Ethereum launched a series of important upgrades to transition from proof-of-work (PoW) to proof-of-stake (PoS), which may help to break down the Blockchain Scalability Trilemma and makes Ethereum a “ultra-sound money”.
In this article, Vitalik directly addresses a specific technical aspect of a subproblem: how to more easily read from L2 to L1, from L1 to L2, or from one L2 to another L2. Solving this issue is crucial for achieving asset/key separation architecture, but it also has valuable use cases in other areas, most notably optimizing reliable cross-L2 calls, including use cases such as moving assets between L1 and L2.

Since Vitalik published the seminal work "The Rollup-Centric Ethereum Roadmap" in October 2020, there have been many changes over the past three years.

In the article, Vitalik outlines several key reasons why it is important to start explicitly considering L1 + cross-L2 support, wallet security, and privacy as essential foundational features of the ecosystem stack, rather than building these things as plugins that can be individually designed by each wallet.

Competition in the Alt L1 space is heating up, with Near introducing a DA solution and Sui's TVL steadily rising. While Ethereum takes its time with mainnet upgrades, L2 introduces two major competitive points: parallel EVM and decentralized sequencers.

The author of this article takes the well-known ZK-Rollup project Aztec as an example, and uses the two recent proposals named B52 and Fernet proposed by Aztec Labs as the starting point to analyze how ZKR can achieve the decentralization of sequencer nodes.

The article introduces a crucial but often overlooked aspect of how Ethereum maintains its security and decentralization: its multi-client approach. Ethereum intentionally lacks a "reference client" that everyone runs by default. Instead, there is a collaboratively managed specification (currently written in human-readable but slow Python) and multiple teams implementing that specification (also referred to as "clients") which users actually run.

The term Data Availability (DA) is an incomplete expression, lacking a clear subject and predicate, and merely describes the importance of transmitting transaction data beyond the execution layer.
