Golden Finance reports that on March 30, the United States eased its energy restrictions on Cuba, allowing a Russian oil tanker loaded with crude oil to head to Cuban ports. Reuters said that vessel tracking data shows that the oil tanker flying the Russian flag has arrived off the eastern coast of Cuba and is expected to dock today (the 30th). This shipment of crude oil is expected to temporarily ease Cuba’s current energy crisis. Affected by the U.S. oil embargo, Cuba has implemented a strict gasoline rationing system and has repeatedly experienced large-scale power outages.
U.S. President Trump told the media on Air Force One that if any country wants to ship some oil to Cuba—regardless of whether that country is Russia or not—he has no objection.
Earlier, the New York Times cited U.S. officials as saying that the U.S. Coast Guard has approved the sanctioned Russian oil tanker to go to Cuba, but did not specify the specific reasons. Analysts believe that amid the current turbulent and unstable geopolitical situation, if the U.S. were to forcibly intercept it, it could increase the risk of a conflict with Russia.
