Just had to sort out my SASSA stuff and realized not everyone knows how to change bank details on SRD properly. Thought I'd share what I learned because honestly, the process is different depending on which grant you're on.
So if you're on a permanent grant like disability or child support, you basically have to go in person to your local SASSA office. They don't let you do it online which is annoying but fair enough for security I guess. You need to fill out a form, bring your ID and proof of your new bank account (like a recent bank statement), and they verify everything there and then. Takes up to 21 days to process after that. The key thing is you need to submit before the 15th of the month if you want it to take effect the following month, otherwise it rolls over.
But here's the thing - if you're on the SRD grant, how to change bank details on SRD is actually way simpler. You can do it all online through their portal. You enter your ID number, they send you a link via SMS, and you just update your banking information from there. Takes a few days to a week for verification. The catch is the account has to be in your name, can't be joint or anything like that.
Changing your phone number is just as important honestly. For SRD, there's a dedicated contact details page where you enter your ID and application number, put in your new number, and they send you an OTP to verify. Permanent grants you'd need to call them or go in person. The helpline is 0800 60 10 11 if you get stuck.
One more thing - there's loads of fake websites out there trying to get people's details, so always make sure you're on the actual official SASSA portal when updating anything. Not worth the risk. Has anyone else had issues with how to change bank details on SRD taking longer than expected?
