I just found out that in Estado de México, license plates are valid for 5 years, while in CDMX they are only 3. It’s quite a difference when I think about it, especially in expenses and paperwork. The thing is, here in Estado de México, the vehicle registration card is renewed every 5 years along with the plates, so you save yourself from having to go every year to handle unnecessary paperwork.
The interesting part is that if you have old license plates (2020 or earlier), the government launched a program to regularize debts. Basically, they forgive ownership tax, renewal fees, and penalties if you get up to date. For those bringing vehicles from elsewhere and wanting to register them here, there are also subsidies on ownership tax in 2026.
The truth is, keeping the license plate validity for longer helps you avoid fines and setbacks during inspections. How do you handle it in CDMX with the 3-year validity? It must be more of a hassle to renew so often.
