I just read something quite interesting about how traditional banking is finally seriously entering the blockchain game. Monument Bank announced that they are working with Midnight Foundation to tokenize retail deposits, and according to Hoskinson, this could be a massive game-changer for TVL in the ecosystem.

What catches my attention is how they are structuring this. It’s not just about putting money into crypto and being done. The tokenized deposits they are proposing are backed one-to-one by real funds in the bank. Customers still have their normal banking protections, their interest, but now they can interact with their deposits through blockchain infrastructure. They are starting with an initial deployment of £250 million.

But the truly ambitious part comes afterward. Hoskinson has been talking about how this could scale to access assets that only the wealthy had before: private equity, commodities, all that. The idea is that tokenization democratizes access to these markets. Additionally, they plan to allow people to borrow against their tokenized assets without selling, something that traditionally only private banking did.

A key detail is that they are using privacy-focused blockchain technology. Sensitive financial data is only accessible to authorized parties, which solves many regulatory concerns. This is important because many blockchain projects face issues balancing transparency with data protection.

What I see here is a significant shift: while many in the space have been focused on institutional adoption, this puts retail users at the center. If Monument Bank and Midnight manage to make this work well, we’ll probably see other banks following the same path. The growth potential in TVL could be substantial if this is replicated in other markets.
