Been watching the crypto markets lately and there's an interesting question popping up everywhere: if you're looking to hold something for the next decade, which one actually makes sense?

Let's talk Bitcoin first. Yeah, it's down 44% from that October 2025 peak. Brutal to watch if you're holding. But here's the thing about Bitcoin that most people miss when they panic sell - this isn't new territory. Over the past 15 years, we've seen this crypto drop 50% or more multiple times. And every single time, it came back stronger. The fundamentals haven't changed. You've still got that hard cap of 21 million coins, which is genuinely rare in any financial market. Network nodes are at all-time highs. Hash rate keeps climbing. These aren't just vanity metrics - they actually matter.

What's really interesting is the macro picture. Bitcoin's market cap is around $1.4 trillion, but that's still tiny compared to total global wealth. Now that institutions, governments, and major asset managers are actually getting involved, you're looking at potential capital flows that could be absolutely massive over time. That's the kind of tailwind that moves prices over a decade.

Now XRP - I get the vision. It's trying to solve real problems with cross-border payments. Fast, cheap transactions. Sounds great in theory. But adoption? That's where it falls apart. If this was actually being used at scale by financial institutions, you'd see it reflected in the token's performance. Instead, XRP is down 9% for 2025 and down 24% so far this year. The price action tells you everything you need to know - this isn't being adopted the way it was supposed to be. It's become more of a speculation play than an actual solution.

So which crypto is the better buy and hold? Bitcoin, pretty clearly. Its purpose is straightforward - become a more widely held asset, increase demand, reward patient holders. XRP had a clear mission too, but the market's verdict is in: it's not happening at the scale that was promised.

If you can stomach the volatility and you're thinking in terms of years, not weeks, Bitcoin's the one worth adding to your portfolio right now.
