U.S. Energy Information Administration: Surge in AI Usage Drives U.S. Electricity Demand to Continue Setting New Records This Year and Next
The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) projects that U.S. electricity consumption will reach a new high in 2025, and will continue to rise further in 2026 and 2027. The EIA expects that U.S. power demand will increase from 4195 billion kilowatt-hours, a record level in 2025, to 4244 billion kilowatt-hours in 2026 and 4381 billion kilowatt-hours in 2027. This is mainly because of the growth in artificial intelligence data centers, as well as greater use of electricity by households and businesses, reducing the use of fossil fuels for heating and transportation.
