Just spent way too much time looking into dog breed personalities and honestly some of the results surprised me. So apparently when you survey thousands of dog owners about their pups, some really clear patterns emerge about which breeds are actually chill and which ones... aren't.
Bernese mountain dogs came out on top as basically the friendliest - like 80% of owners say they play well with other dogs, super cuddly, rarely defensive. Golden retrievers and Corgis are right there too, which tracks with what everyone says about them. Labs are solid too, though interestingly they're not quite as welcoming to treats from strangers as you'd think. Boxers made the top 5 as well.
But here's where it gets interesting - the unfriendliest dog breeds tell a different story. American bulldogs scored lowest overall, which is wild because people think they're well-behaved. But apparently only 56% of owners say their bulldog happily takes treats from others, and they're not huge cuddlers. Doberman pinschers and Rottweilers are also on that unfriendliest list - makes sense given they're bred to be protective. They don't warm up to strangers easily.
The methodology was pretty solid too - they asked owners about cuddles, how dogs greet newcomers, playing with other dogs, accepting treats from people, and overall friendliness. Each metric counted equally. Some of the unfriendliest breeds like Cane Corsos and Shih Tzus just don't play well with other dogs or accept treats from random people.
Thing is, breed definitely matters but early socialization probably matters just as much. A friendly breed without proper training won't stay friendly, and vice versa. Still interesting to see which breeds naturally lean one way or another though.
