Japan's gasoline retail prices hit a new high

Japan’s Agency for Natural Resources and Energy released statistics on March 18 showing that, affected by the situation in the Middle East, as of the 16th, the nationwide average retail price of regular gasoline in Japan rose to 190.8 yen per liter (about 159 yen to 1 US dollar), reaching a record high. The data show that the price has been rising for the fifth consecutive week, increasing by 29 yen this week compared with the previous week. Earlier, the Japanese government announced that it would start a gasoline price subsidy program on the 19th, aiming to keep the average retail price of gasoline at around 170 yen per liter. Kyodo News on the 18th, citing information from Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, said that during the period from the 19th to the 25th, the gasoline subsidy would be 30.2 yen per liter. Based on this, the fund balance of a total amount of 280 billion yen, which will serve as the source of the subsidy, is expected to be depleted within the next month. (Xinhua Finance)
