ING Group: Oil Price Shock Hits Eurozone Households First

An economist at ING Groep noted in an article on its website on the 12th that, driven by factors such as the continued tense situation in the Middle East and disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, fuel prices in countries have risen, with households in the euro area bearing the brunt first. This will further deal a blow to the euro area’s already lackluster consumer confidence and weaken households’ real purchasing power. In the article, Karsten Breuski, head of macro research at ING Groep, and senior economist Frantssiska Biel said that as fuel prices soar, for many households in the euro area, the pressure of filling up a full tank of gas is almost comparable to the period of the 2022 energy crisis.
