Vans visits Hungary to campaign for Orbán and criticizes EU interference in the elections
Hungary will hold a general election on Sunday, and as U.S. Vice President Vance (JD Vance) visits Budapest to campaign for Prime Minister Orban (Viktor Orban), who is trailing in the polls. When Vance and Orban attended a press conference, they criticized the behavior of the European Union interfering in Hungary’s election, calling it disgraceful.
Vance accused Brussels of trying to destroy Hungary’s economy, reduce Hungary’s energy independence, and drive up costs for Hungarian consumers. He said there is only one reason: because the European Union hates Orban. Vance praised Orban to no end, saying he is a person who tirelessly works for the country and defends the values of Western civilization.
Orban said that after discussing with Vance major problems facing Western civilization—including immigration, gender ideology, family policy, and global security—he also launched a fierce attack on foreign intelligence agencies’ brazen interference in Hungary’s election process.
Afterward, Vance attended Orban’s campaign rally and delivered a speech.
This election is considered the most severe challenge Orban has faced in nearly 40 years of political career. Most polls show that support for Fidesz, the youth-wing alliance (Fidesz) led by Orban, who has been in power since 2016, lags behind the center-right “Respect and Freedom Party” (TISZA), founded by former party colleagues, by 10 to 20 percentage points.
Orban has long supported U.S. President Trump’s “Make America Great Again” campaign, and on anti-immigration policies he is highly aligned with the Trump administration’s position. Trump had previously said he hoped Orban would win, and he won big.
