So I've been diving into this whole rare bill collecting thing lately and honestly it's wild how much money could literally be in your wallet right now. Like, most people think a $2 bill is just a novelty, but some of these are actually worth serious cash if you know what to look for.
Started looking into the older series first. The 1928 $2 bills are apparently the holy grail for collectors, especially the ones with red seals. Even circulated ones can fetch $4 to $175 depending on condition. Then there's the 1953 Red Seal series which isn't as rare but still valuable. The uncirculated ones start around $12, but if you get one with a star note in really good condition you could be looking at $15 to $18. The 1976 Bicentennial $2 bills are interesting too because some with errors or unique serial numbers go for $5 to over $500.
But here's where it gets interesting - the $50 and $100 bills. I found out about this rare 100 dollar bill from 1966 with a red seal that could be worth $135 to $169. And the 1996 $100 star notes? Some of those are going for $150 to $350. Even newer stuff like the 2009A series has rare 100 dollar bills worth upwards of $1,175 if they have the right serial numbers or printing variations.
The thing is, condition matters everything. A rare 100 dollar bill in uncirculated condition versus circulated is a completely different valuation. I'm now actually checking my old bills and looking at serial numbers. Pretty crazy that you could have a rare 100 dollar bill sitting in a drawer somewhere. Definitely worth asking a currency expert if you think you have something unusual, but the hunt itself is kind of fun.
