Just spent way too much time digging into housing markets and found something interesting. Turns out there are actually solid options if you want to find the cheapest and safest places to live in the US without completely emptying your wallet.
Ohio keeps popping up in these searches - like, a lot. Seven towns from Ohio made the top 15, which is kind of wild. New Philadelphia leads the pack with an annual cost of living around $35,500 and violent crime rates that are genuinely low. Home values hover around $186k there, monthly mortgage around $1,100. The livability score is decent too at 76.
What caught my attention is how varied these places are. New Ulm, Minnesota has an even lower violent crime rate (0.29 per 1,000) but slightly higher living costs at $36,361 annually. Then you've got San Elizario, Texas which is incredibly cheap at just under $37k per year with almost zero violent crime - 0.10 per 1,000. That's genuinely impressive.
The bigger picture here is that you don't have to choose between safety and affordability anymore. Places like Columbus, Indiana and Trenton, Michigan offer livability scores in the mid-80s while keeping annual costs under $42k. Edwardsville, Illinois rounds out the list with the highest livability score at 90, though you're paying closer to $45k annually.
Most of these towns have populations between 10k and 50k, so you're getting that sweet spot - big enough to have actual amenities, small enough to feel like a real community. Property crime rates vary more than violent crime, but even the higher ones aren't alarming compared to major cities.
If you're seriously considering relocating and looking for the cheapest and safest places to live in the US, these 15 are worth actual research beyond just browsing real estate sites. The data here is solid - pulled from FBI crime stats, Census data, and Zillow valuations from early 2025, so it's pretty comprehensive. Definitely worth a closer look if you're tired of paying astronomical rent or dealing with sketchy neighborhoods.
