This report was released in Beijing on March 31 (Reporter Ding Yiting). The “Energy Storage Industry Research White Paper 2026” released on March 31 shows that as of the end of 2025, China’s newly added total installed capacity of new-type energy storage exceeded 100 gigawatts, accounting for more than two-thirds of the domestic power energy storage total. Compared with the end of the “13th Five-Year Plan,” it has grown by more than 40 times. For the first time, China’s share in the global new-type energy storage market surpassed half, reaching 51.9%.

In terms of technical structure, lithium-ion batteries remain dominant, with an installed-capacity share of over 96%. However, as multiple hundred-megawatt-class long-duration energy storage projects have been put into operation one after another, the technical structure is gradually showing a trend toward diversification. A batch of frontier new-type energy storage technologies, such as solid-state batteries and hydrogen energy storage, are accelerating development, providing support for future new power systems’ energy storage needs across multiple time scales and with high safety. In regional distribution, since the “14th Five-Year Plan” period began, new-type energy storage projects have been accelerating in concentration toward wind and solar resource-rich areas such as Northwest China and North China, with Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang becoming the fastest-growing regions.

Chen Haisheng, chairman of the board of the Zhongguancun Energy Storage Industry Technology Alliance, said that China, the United States, and Europe are still the three regions with the largest energy storage market sizes globally. China’s newly added installed capacity of new-type energy storage has ranked first worldwide for four consecutive years. However, as energy storage markets in regions such as the Middle East and Latin America rise rapidly, the global energy storage market is gradually expanding to a broader range of regions.

During the “15th Five-Year Plan” period, new-type energy storage will become a primary carrier of new flexible regulation capacity for power systems. At the same time, even as the new-type energy storage industry develops rapidly, it still faces some challenges, such as the need to improve market mechanisms and project management standards, and further enhance the maturity of some energy storage technologies.

A relevant official from the Energy Conservation and Technology Equipment Department of the National Energy Administration said that efforts should be made to accelerate the improvement of market mechanisms for new-type energy storage. Local governments should be encouraged to study and explore auxiliary service product varieties according to local conditions and gradually expand the scale of new-type energy storage participating in auxiliary services. The capacity pricing mechanism for new-type energy storage should be improved, and a reliable capacity compensation mechanism should be established in an orderly manner to guide the rational development of new-type energy storage.
