Just came across some interesting research on affordable housing markets in the US, and honestly surprised by what I found. Turns out there are legit options if you're looking for the cheapest, safest place to live without compromising on either factor.
Ohio dominates the list - like, 7 cities in the top 15. New Philadelphia tops it with homes averaging around $186k and annual living costs under $36k. New Ulm, Minnesota is another standout with incredibly low violent crime (0.29 per 1,000) and similar affordability. Then there's San Elizario, Texas - smallest population but lowest violent crime rate at just 0.10 per 1,000, with homes under $170k.
What's wild is how varied these places are. You've got everything from small towns like New Philadelphia (17k people) to Columbus, Indiana (51k). Trenton, Michigan and Edwardsville, Illinois both score high on livability while staying affordable. Monthly mortgage costs range from about $1k to $1.8k depending on location.
The research pulled data from FBI crime stats, Census data, and real estate indices - so it's pretty comprehensive. If you're serious about finding the safest, cheapest place to settle down without the usual trade-offs between safety and affordability, these 15 markets are worth looking into. Each has its own vibe but they all check both boxes.
