Is Vitalik Buterin really selling ETH?
Conclusion: This is a typical case of “panic misinterpretation.” Recently, Vitalik has not engaged in “panic selling,” and the so-called “accelerated sell-off” circulating online is mostly a misinterpretation of old news and donation transfers as “big players fleeing.”
1. Fact Check: Transfers ≠ Personal Cash-Out
Recent facts: Between February and March 2026, Vitalik indeed transferred and sold approximately 16k–19k ETH. But this was not an emergency event; it was part of his “multi-year fund management plan” publicly announced on January 30.
Actual purpose: These funds are mainly used to support open-source projects, public goods, and Ethereum core development—long-term ecosystem investments—not personal profit-taking.
Personal holdings: Even after these transactions, on-chain data shows he still holds about 220k–230k ETH, far from a “full liquidation.”
2. Rumor Origins: Why is it gaining traction today?
Emotional transfer: Due to the tense US-Iran situation and market downturns today, social media (X/Twitter) is resurfacing on-chain records from months ago, combined with unverified reports like “Wu Jihan is liquidating,” spreading panic narratives of “big players fleeing the top.”
Concept confusion: Some transfers are donations to charities (such as Kanro) or research institutions. The recipients later sell these assets on the market to cover operational costs. This has been mistakenly attributed to Vitalik himself.
3. Market Impact Assessment
Not a bearish signal: Vitalik’s sales are transparent, planned, long-term fund reallocations, fundamentally different from “bearish outlook.” Compared to ETH’s daily trading volume of hundreds of billions of dollars, his daily sell amount is almost negligible and does not constitute significant selling pressure.
Operational advice: Please ignore the “dumping” noise on social media. The current ETH price fluctuations are mainly driven by geopolitical tensions and macro liquidity, not by the founder’s routine fund operations.
