Just realized how confusing crypto slang can be when you first jump into the space. Like, I spent my first week on Discord totally lost trying to figure out what everyone was talking about. Turns out there's basically a whole different language in Web3 that you gotta pick up if you want to actually fit in with the community.
Let me break down some of the essentials I've learned. First off, gm meaning "good morning" is literally everywhere. You'll see it spammed across Twitter, Discord, Telegram - it's like the crypto community's way of saying hello and building that vibe of togetherness. Same energy with gn (good night), but that's how people signal they're heading out for the night. Pretty wholesome honestly.
Then there's the knowledge drops. ALPHA is basically insider info or solid knowledge that hasn't hit the mainstream yet. ANON refers to anonymous users - people who stay nameless in the community. You'll hear people say stuff like "thanks anon" pretty casually.
When it comes to holdings, BAGS just means your assets. HODL is the classic one - hold on for dear life, basically the opposite of panic selling. Which brings me to DIAMOND HANDS versus PAPER HANDS. Diamond hands are people who hold through the dips and actually see gains. Paper hands are the ones who sell at the first sign of trouble, usually ending up with less profit because they didn't stick around long enough.
There's also the whole NFT-specific lingo. MINT is the primary sale, FP or FLOOR PRICE is the lowest "buy now" price you'll see. WHITELIST (or WL/ALLOWLIST as some prefer) is that pre-sale list where early people can grab stuff first. People always asking "wen WL?" meaning when's the whitelist dropping.
Then you've got the vibe words. WAGMI - we're all gonna make it - is what the community says to keep spirits up. NGMI (not gonna make it) is the opposite, kinda dismissive. LFG means let's go, GRIND means working hard toward something. DEGEN is just short for degenerate, used pretty casually. NORMIE is someone new to crypto who doesn't get the culture yet.
The scary ones to watch for are RUG and RUGPULL - that's when project creators literally disappear with everyone's money. It happens and it's brutal.
Honestly, once you start using gm meaning in context with the rest of these terms, you start feeling like you actually belong in the space. It's wild how much of the crypto experience is about speaking the language. Start dropping these in your Discord chats and Twitter posts and you'll fit right in with the community. Just remember NFA - not financial advice - if you're actually making moves based on what people are saying.
