Stanford scientists explore the potential and limitations of AI-assisted research and peer review

Stanford University computer science researcher James Zou has recently explored how large language models can help scientific peers with the peer-review process and accelerate research progress. He took part in a large-scale randomized experiment involving about 20k reviews to assess the impact of AI-assisted reviewing on review quality. The study found that AI performs well at identifying objective, verifiable errors or inconsistencies (such as data mismatches or formula mistakes), but it has limitations when it comes to subjective judgments like assessing the novelty or importance of research, and sometimes even shows a tendency to flatter. Zou emphasized that AI should support rather than replace human decision-making; scientists must be responsible for the research outcomes, and should clearly and transparently disclose how much the AI was involved. The experiment showed that AI feedback improved review quality and reviewer engagement. Future plans include holding more conferences to standardize AI’s use in science. (Source: InFoQ)
