“When the teacher called to tell us that the rightful owner’s uncle was coming to deliver a thank-you banner, we felt both excited and happy, and ran down the stairs in a flash…” Today, two students, Gao Qinhui and Lin Yalin, from Class 1, Grade 2025, majoring in Big Data and Accounting in the Digital Business School of Dezhou Engineering Vocational College, received a bright red thank-you banner from the rightful owner, Cheng Xianhai. Behind this thank-you banner is a heartwarming story of returning lost property with integrity, and also a vivid illustration of the school’s “Degonghong” volunteer service spirit.

On March 26, in accordance with the school’s “Degonghong” volunteer service arrangements, Gao Qinhui and Lin Yalin carried out regular volunteer service at Qilu Hospital of Shandong University—Dezhou Hospital. During a break, when the two went out to print materials, they accidentally found a package on the shared bicycles across from the hospital. After opening it, they discovered that it contained many important documents, including an ID card, driver’s license, bank card, social security card, and senior citizen card, among others. The documents involved the rightful owner’s daily life, travel, and various rights and interests protections; if they were lost, it would cause the rightful owner great inconvenience.

“Back then, my first thought was that the rightful owner must be very anxious—replacing all these documents would be extremely troublesome.” Recalling the situation at the time, the two students still could not hide their urgency. Guided by the responsibility and commitment cultivated through volunteer service, they hesitated not a moment. They immediately contacted the school’s supervising teacher. With the teacher’s guidance, they delivered the package to the hospital’s medical guide desk. Since the system was unable to find the rightful owner’s information, the medical guide desk suggested handing it over to the hospital’s police affairs unit. In the end, with the help of the police officers, they successfully contacted Cheng Xianhai, the rightful owner from Pingyuan County of Dezhou. Upon learning that all the documents had been recovered, Cheng Xianhai was extremely moved. He even made a special trip to the school to deliver the thank-you banner as a gesture of thanks.

When talking about how she felt after receiving the thank-you banner, Gao Qinhui and Lin Yalin could not conceal their joy. During the group photo, the two girls smiled especially brightly. “After we finished the photo, my mood couldn’t be calmed for a long time. I felt like I had only done a small thing within my capability, yet I received full recognition—and it also made me truly understand the meaning of volunteer service.”

The good deed of the two students is not accidental; it is the inevitable result of the Dezhou Engineering Vocational College “Degonghong” volunteer service brand being deeply rooted over the long term.

The school is committed to building the “Degonghong” brand. It has attracted and registered more than 1,400 volunteer student members, forming a strong atmosphere of “everyone can help, anytime can help, and everywhere can help.” Among them, the regular volunteer service program in cooperation with Qilu Hospital of Shandong University—Dezhou Hospital has, to date, organized 25 sessions with 745 students participating, providing more than 41,720 hours of service. It is through such practical experiences that students cultivate a strong sense of responsibility and empathy, treating returning lost property with integrity as something that should be done as a matter of duty.

In an interview, Gao Qinhui mentioned that last year’s New Youth Music Festival had volunteer participants. “If there’s another chance, I also want to sign up,” she told reporters. Doing every volunteer service well is an important stage for “Degonghong” volunteers. Worth noting is that during the New Youth Music Festival in the Jincheng Real Estate · 2025 Dezhou Tianqu New District, the school sent 1,200 volunteers to participate in on-site service. With young people’s fiery passion and sense of responsibility, they built a volunteer service support network, and with their sweat and perseverance, they wrote the most beautiful “youth answer sheet” of the New Youth Music Festival.
