Israel's largest natural gas field resumes production after a month of shutdown

After a war in Iran led to a 33-day shutdown, Israel’s largest natural gas field has resumed production, which could ease some pressure in a supply-tight market.

A spokesperson for Newmed Energy LP, a stakeholder, told reporters that the Leviathan project can now resume supplying the domestic market and exports. The day before, Israel’s Ministry of Energy announced that the project is set to restart. The Leviathan gas field is a major natural gas field operated by Chevron in the eastern Mediterranean. It is crucial not only for meeting Israel’s local natural gas demand, but also for Egypt.

After fighting broke out on February 28, Israel ordered the temporary shutdown of some natural gas fields for security reasons. The war disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, and missile strikes damaged Qatar’s world’s largest liquefied natural gas plant, further intensifying tensions in the global market.
