Have you ever stopped to think about how much you're silently losing to MEV bots? Recently, I've been seeing more people complain about this, and it's truly a problem that deserves attention.
MEV bots are basically siphoning profit opportunities on Ethereum by manipulating the order of transactions. Here's how they work: these bots can see pending transactions in the mempool and exploit that to profit before and after your trades. It's like being in a line where someone can cut in front of you and make a profit from it.
There are several types circulating out there. There's the arbitrage bot that profits from price differences between different DEXs. Then there's the one that buys and sells before and after large trades, known as a (sandwich attack). There's also front-running bots that try to get transactions before you do. And others that come afterward, capturing opportunities. Not to mention bots that use flash loans to manipulate everything. Honestly, I’ve discovered there are over 30 different variations of MEV bots out there.
So, how can you defend yourself? The first step is to reduce your slippage tolerance. Set a very low limit, like 1.5% to 2% at most. The higher the slippage, the easier it is for these bots to exploit you. But be careful: setting it too low might cause your transaction to fail.
Another strategy is to trade in pools with high liquidity. The larger the volume, the less impact a single transaction has on the price, making it harder for MEV bots to exploit you. The downside is that this limits your options, especially with newer tokens.
There are tools that help a lot. Flashbots Protect is one of them. You go to their website, click on settings, select protection, and add it to your wallet. If that doesn’t work, there's the MEV Blocker alternative. Scroll to the bottom of the page, find the option to add the blocker’s RPC, and add it manually.
If you use Solana, the story is similar. Reduce slippage to around 1.5% to 2%. There are specific tools with anti-MEV features as well. Some Telegram bots like Trojan and Maestro offer interesting protection.
In the end, these MEV bots are silently stealing from users, especially on Ethereum. But you can protect yourself by taking simple measures: control your slippage, use pools with high liquidity, and add protection tools to your wallet. With awareness and action, you can significantly reduce the risk of losing assets this way.
