It is interesting to trace which countries were part of the Ottoman Empire throughout its history. It is one of the largest empires in terms of territorial extent.
In Europe, Ottoman rule was particularly long-lasting. Turkey was under their control for 623 years, Bulgaria for 515 years, North Macedonia for 542 years. Greece experienced their influence for 370 to 520 years depending on the region. Serbia for 419 years, Montenegro for 399 years, Bosnia and Herzegovina for 415 years. Even Croatia was partially conquered for 147 years, Kosovo for 524 years. Interestingly, Romania was divided: Wallachia, Moldova, and Transylvania were under Ottoman rule for 484, 340, and 337 years respectively. Hungary endured 160-192 years of occupation, and a small region of Ujvara in Slovakia for only 22 years. Albania was conquered for 527 years.
In the Caucasus, the situation was more complex. Georgia experienced several periods of dominance — 349, 398, and even 1 year at different times. Armenia for 41 years, Azerbaijan for 26 years. The Caucasus regions of Russia, including Dagestan and Kabarda, were under control for about 355 years.
In the Middle East, the empire held most territories for a long time. Iraq for 404 years, Syria for 402 years, Jordan, Israel, and Lebanon for 402 years each. Palestine for 401 years. Saudi Arabia in its various parts (Hijaz, Nedd, Al-Ahsa) was under Ottoman control for 393 years. Kuwait for 361-375 years. Oman, specifically its part with Muscat, was conquered for only 8 years, and Yemen for 146 years in two separate periods. Cyprus experienced 307-343 years of occupation. Qatar for only 42 years.
In Africa, Ottoman influence was also significant. Egypt was under control for 365-397 years, Libya for 382 years, Algeria for 315 years, Tunisia for 307-330 years, Sudan for 365-397 years. Even Eritrea was conquered for 330 years, Djibouti for 329 years, Somalia for 361 years. South Sudan for 93 years. Morocco had a very short period — 20 years. Eastern Ethiopia in the Harar region was under Ottoman rule for 8 years, Niger for 31 years, Chad for 37 years, and the Mombasa region in Kenya for only 5 years.
Such a scale of conquests shows how vast the Ottoman Empire was. The duration of its rule in different countries ranged from a few years to over 600 years, reflecting the complex political situation in each region.
