Honestly, I’ve been looking for good movies about cryptocurrency that not only entertain but also genuinely help understand the topic. Over the years, there have been quite a few interesting works in film and documentaries exploring blockchain, Bitcoin, and the entire crypto world from different angles.
For me, documentaries are the best way to understand history. Take "The Rise and Rise of Bitcoin" (2014) — it shows Bitcoin’s journey through the eyes of early believers, miners, and investors. You can really see the challenges they overcame. Or "Banking on Bitcoin" (2016) — an excellent entry point into the history and potential of disrupting traditional finance. Plus, they honestly discuss regulatory obstacles.
"Trust Machine: The Story of Blockchain" (2018) by Alex Winter offers a deeper dive. It reveals how blockchain can transform various industries, from finance to charity. If you want to understand the technology’s potential, it’s worth watching.
If you prefer more philosophical content, I recommend "The Bitcoin Gospel" (2015). Roger Ver and other key figures talk about why Bitcoin is a tool of freedom for them. An interesting perspective on the values driving the crypto community.
For those looking for something more intense and criminal, "Trust No One: The Hunt for the Crypto King" (2022) on Netflix. It’s a real story about Gerald Cotten and QuadrigaCX, where $250 million in crypto simply disappeared. Shocking and frightening at the same time.
"Bitcoin: Beyond the Bubble" (2018) raises the classic question — is this a speculative bubble or the future of money? Informative and thought-provoking.
There are also fictional films about cryptocurrency that are no less interesting. "Crypto" (2019) — a crime drama about a Wall Street banker uncovering a money laundering and crypto conspiracy. Tense and engaging. "Bitcoin Heist" (2016) — Vietnamese action where thieves hunt a cybercriminal. It’s like "Ocean’s Eleven" in the crypto world, a fun mix of heist and drama.
For series fans, there’s "StartUp" (2016–2018) — a TV thriller about creating GenCoin and all the obstacles developers face. It blends technology and crime drama well.
"Crypto Race" (2020) approaches from an interesting angle — focusing on the rise of women in the crypto space and blockchain’s impact on various industries. Inspiring content.
"Open Money" (2020) follows Dragonchain and their fight against regulatory challenges. It shows the real difficulties in the blockchain industry.
There’s even a satirical film, "Deciphered" (2021) — a dark comedy about a secret government team trying to find Satoshi Nakamoto. Humor plus intrigue.
Honestly, there’s something for everyone on this list. From action and thrillers to educational documentaries — all these movies about cryptocurrency show how this technology influences society, finance, and our concept of freedom. Whether you’re a crypto enthusiast, investor, or just a curious person, there’s plenty to watch and discuss afterward.
