ME News, on April 4 (UTC+8), local time Friday, U.S. District Judge James Boasberg, the chief judge for the District of Columbia, dismissed the U.S. Department of Justice’s request to rehear its ruling in the criminal case involving Powell. Boasberg’s prior ruling had blocked subpoenas issued in connection with the criminal investigation involving Powell. In a March 13 ruling, Boasberg said the subpoena sent last January to the Federal Reserve Board was issued for an improper purpose; it was intended to pressure Powell into agreeing to the conditions sought by Trump for rapidly cutting interest rates or resigning. The subpoena against Powell was issued by Jennyne Piro, the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia (a staunch supporter of Trump). Piro has promised to continue the investigation and said her office is ready to appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. According to sources, senior leadership at the U.S. Department of Justice supports this appeal decision. This appeal may delay confirmation of Kevin Wash’s nomination as chairman of the Federal Reserve. U.S. Senator Tom Tillis is a Republican member of the Senate Banking Committee. He previously criticized the investigation into Powell, and he vowed to continue blocking Wash’s nomination during the appeal process. (Source: Jinshi)
