(MENAFN) Former Iranian president Hassan Rouhani on Wednesday called for immediate and comprehensive political changes, arguing that such steps are essential to protect both the country and its governing system during the ongoing conflict.

According to reports, Rouhani appealed to Iran’s Supreme National Security Council to evaluate multiple possible paths, including whether to continue or bring the war to an end, and to reach a decision within a lawful framework. He stressed that this approach is needed to counter what he described as hostile strategies.

He emphasized that safeguarding the nation and its political structure depends on implementing urgent and fundamental reforms. Rouhani also cautioned that the leadership’s primary remaining strength lies in public backing, noting that citizens are facing significant frustrations and unmet demands.

In addition, he underscored the importance of learning from past negotiations with the United States. Rouhani claimed that efforts by adversaries to remove uranium from Iranian soil and take control of key islands to dominate the Strait of Hormuz reveal deeper strategic intentions.

As stated by reports, the United States and Israel have continued an aerial campaign against Iran since Feb. 28, resulting in more than 1,340 fatalities, including former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Iran has responded with drone and missile attacks targeting Israel, as well as countries such as Jordan and Iraq, in addition to Gulf states hosting US military installations. These strikes have led to casualties, infrastructure damage, and widespread disruption affecting global markets and aviation.
