Just realized something - if you're trading crypto but don't really track your PNL, you're basically flying blind. Let me break this down because it's actually simpler than it sounds.
So PNL is just Profit and Loss, right? But here's the thing most beginners miss: there are actually different types you need to pay attention to.
First, there's unrealized PNL. This is the profit or loss you're sitting on while a position is still open. Say you grabbed some ETH at $2,000 and now it's trading at $2,050 - congrats, you've got an unrealized gain of $50. But here's the catch: it's not real money until you actually sell. The market could flip tomorrow and that profit disappears.
Then there's realized PNL. This is when you actually close the trade and lock in your gains or losses. You sell that ETH at $2,050? Now that $50 profit is real. You can't take it back. This is what actually moves your account balance.
And then there's today's PNL - basically a snapshot of everything you made or lost just on this current day. It resets daily, which is pretty useful for tracking how you're actually performing. Green means you're winning today, red means you're taking losses. Simple as that.
Looking at the market right now, BTC is sitting around $67.15K with a +0.44% move, ETH is at $2.05K flat, and BNB is at $589.10 with a +0.32% push. These kinds of micro-movements are exactly where understanding your PNL matters - you need to know if your positions are actually working or if you're just hoping.
The real value here isn't just knowing if you're up or down. It's about making smarter decisions. When you understand your PNL in real-time, you can actually cut losses before they get worse or take profits when the opportunity is there. It's the difference between trading with a strategy and just gambling.
Honestly, if you're not actively checking your PNL on Gate or wherever you trade, start today. It changes how you think about your positions. What's your PNL looking like this week?
