“Subsidy changes put us in very unfavorable conditions, and the start has been extremely difficult,” said Toshiki Toffuji, president of BYD Japan, with a serious expression in January.

BYD EV subsidies not increased

In tariff negotiations between Japan and the U.S., Japan agreed to make it easier for American automakers to obtain subsidies for pure electric vehicles (EVs). After that, the Japanese government revised its EV subsidies starting in January, raising the cap by 400,000 yen.

The increase in subsidies will be determined based on the previous amounts. Toyota and U.S. Tesla, for example, increased by 400,000 yen to reach the cap, and can receive subsidies of more than 1 million yen. BYD’s subsidy is only 350,000 yen, so it was not increased.
