A well-known intersection in Shibuya, Tokyo, was the scene of a arson incident last night. During the busiest period of foot traffic, a man ignited a flammable liquid in the center of the road and then fled. According to reports by Japanese media, after the incident, a man in his 50s living in Nagoya, who said he works in painting, turned himself in at a police station; the motive for the arson remains unclear.

The incident occurred at around 9 p.m. local time last night. A man stopped in the center of the Shibuya intersection, poured out a flammable liquid from a canister, and then ignited it with a lighter. The flames quickly flared up in the middle of the intersection, and the fire could be clearly seen. There were reports from passersby that they could smell gasoline. Police and fire services, after receiving a report, rushed to the scene and immediately put out the fire; no injuries or fatalities were reported.

Police said the suspect briefly fled the scene after setting the fire, but shortly afterward went to the police station on his own to turn himself in. Police have launched an investigation and are also reviewing surveillance footage to determine how the incident unfolded.
