Recently, I needed to do some account testing and realized how convenient SMS reception platforms are. Instead of buying new SIM cards, it's much easier to use virtual numbers directly. After trying several platforms, I finally found some reliable ones—I've encountered countless pitfalls along the way.
The first platform I used couldn't receive SMS messages, and the next one had delays of half a day. In the end, I summarized a few decent SMS reception platforms. SMS-Activate is used the most; verification codes arrive within about 10 seconds, with full country coverage, making it especially suitable for cross-border testing. I also tried SuperCloudSMS, which provides receipts in about 10 to 30 seconds for US numbers; Chinese numbers are even faster, showing codes in 5 to 20 seconds, though sometimes it gets stuck during peak times. 5SIM has a user-friendly interface, clear API documentation, and can normally receive codes from Google, Twitter, and other platforms. For domestic apps, Xiaoniao SMS is good; common e-commerce and social platforms receive verification codes in 5 to 15 seconds, offering decent value. There's also Getsmscode—it's cheap, but may have delays on less popular platforms, making it suitable for light users.
When using SMS reception platforms, be aware that some numbers are shared and can be used by others. Verification codes might be delayed, especially for less common countries or apps. My experience is that if you're just testing APIs, any platform supporting API access is enough. But if you need stable registration on a specific overseas website, it's best to prepare multiple numbers so you can switch quickly if one becomes invalid. Some platforms support one-click number switching, which is especially practical and helps avoid waste.
A small tip: don't use virtual numbers as your primary long-term number, as privacy and security are not guaranteed. Based on my experience, SMS-Activate and 5SIM perform the best overall—low latency and wide coverage. If you have to choose just one, both are worth trying.
