OpenAI Major Leadership Changes: Chief Operating Officer Transitioning to Head of AGI Business, and the Current Head on Medical Leave
With an IPO potentially starting as early as this year, major management changes have emerged at OpenAI: the Chief Operating Officer (COO) has shifted roles, while two other executives have temporarily stepped away from their positions for health reasons.
It is reported that Brad Lightcap, who has long served as OpenAI’s COO, will move into the role of “Head of Special Projects,” reporting directly to CEO Sam Altman. One of his key tasks is to lead efforts to advance a joint venture project formed by OpenAI in cooperation with a private equity firm, to drive the development of the company’s enterprise software sales business.
Denise Dresser, the Chief Revenue Officer recently appointed by the company, will take over some of Lightcap’s existing responsibilities.
At the same time, Chief Marketing Officer Kate Rouch will step down in order to focus on cancer recovery treatment, and plans to return to the role with more limited responsibilities if her health allows. The company is seeking a new Chief Marketing Officer.
In addition, Fidji Simo, the CEO who is responsible for AGI business and coordinates the company’s core operations, will also receive a new therapy for her ongoing neuroimmunological condition. She is expected to take a leave of a few weeks and then return to the job.
This series of personnel changes comes at a critical stage for the company. OpenAI is preparing for a possible initial public offering (IPO) and completed a funding round this week, raising $122 billion, with a company valuation of $852 billion.
Meanwhile, the company is also exploring new revenue streams, including initiatives such as introducing advertisements in ChatGPT. In addition, OpenAI faces pressure from competitors such as Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet, and Anthropic, among others, with Anthropic also expected to list as early as this year.
In a statement, OpenAI said: “We have a strong management team focused on advancing cutting-edge research, expanding a global user base to nearly 1 billion users, and accelerating the rollout of enterprise applications. The company has the ability to execute its strategy consistently, maintaining stable and growth momentum.”
In fact, this is not the first time OpenAI has experienced upheaval at the top. Within months after Altman was briefly removed in late 2023, the company went through a series of high-profile executive departures. The company then restructured its board and executive leadership team, significantly expanding the organization and bringing in seasoned executives with experience in markets, finance, and operations.
Fidji Simo previously served as CEO of Instacart and joined OpenAI’s executive team last year, tasked with driving the company’s product strategy. Recently, she has played a key role in pushing the integration of the company’s scattered product ecosystem, leading the development of a “super app” that combines an integrated chatbot, programming tools, and a browser.
She has also advocated for reducing investment in “side projects.” Not long after, the company stopped supporting her AI video generation tool and moved forward with testing an advertising business in ChatGPT.
In an internal memo, Simo said: “The timing is disappointing, because we have a highly compelling development roadmap and the team is pushing hard. I don’t want to miss a moment. But the company is in good shape, and we have an excellent team that can step in.”
During Simo’s leave, OpenAI co-founder and president Greg Brockman will handle product work. Other executives will also share her responsibilities, including Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon, Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar, and Denise Dresser.
