BlockBeats message, April 4, local time Friday, Chief U.S. District Judge of the District of Columbia James Boasberg denied the Department of Justice’s request to rehear the ruling in the criminal case against Powell. Previously, his ruling had blocked subpoenas issued in connection with the criminal investigation involving Powell.

In his March 13 ruling, Boasberg said that a subpoena sent in January of last year to the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve was issued for an improper purpose—aimed at pressuring Powell to agree to the conditions of Trump’s demand that he rapidly cut interest rates or resign. The subpoena against Powell was issued by Jenny En Piro, the Chief U.S. Attorney for the District of Washington, a steadfast supporter of Trump. Piro has promised to continue the investigation and said her office is ready to appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

According to sources, senior officials at the Department of Justice support this appeal decision. This appeal could delay confirmation of Kevin Wossh’s nomination to be Chairman of the Federal Reserve. U.S. Senator Tom Tillis, a Republican member of the Senate Banking Committee, previously criticized the investigation into Powell, and he vowed to continue blocking Wossh’s nomination while the appeal proceedings are ongoing.
