The true cycle of the altseason: when pessimism precedes opportunities
The argument that altseason will never happen again is recurrent among discouraged analysts in the crypto market. However, this negative narrative hides a more complex reality about how market cycles actually work and the role that Bitcoin’s dominance plays in the rotation of capital.
Why BTC dominance remains at high levels
BTC dominance refers to the percentage of the total crypto market value that Bitcoin represents. In extended cycles like the current one, it is normal for BTC to maintain a dominant share for longer periods than usual. This does not mean that altseason is impossible; it simply means we are in a particular phase of the cycle where Bitcoin leads the price movement.
Many analysts interpret the high levels of BTC dominance as a signal that altcoins are “dead.” But this conclusion overlooks a crucial psychological factor: market trauma.
The retail trauma cycle and the gestation of the next movement
During 2024 and 2025, retail entered the market in search of quick profits. First, they bought altcoins at moments of maximum optimism, experiencing significant losses. Then, seeking to recover, they moved towards memecoins, only to suffer new declines. This double psychological blow created a collective scar in the market’s memory.
Here lies the key: the best altseason movements do not start when everyone is optimistic about altcoins. They begin precisely when everyone has given up on them. Widespread pessimism is the breeding ground for the next rally.
Observe the current sentiment: “Altcoins are dead,” “I will never buy them again,” “Altseason is over forever.” These comments precisely replicate the discouragement that precedes the strongest movements.
Early signs of a tide change
During the recent BTC declines, altcoins showed unusual resilience. They did not fall proportionally as they would in a completely weak market. This behavior is not a coincidence: it is a technical signal that the market structure is reorienting.
When altcoins maintain their value against Bitcoin’s declines, this suggests that capital is beginning to position itself strategically. Patient and experienced players are already spotting these opportunities while most of retail remains paralyzed by fear.
Patience as the key to future altseason
The next altseason cycle belongs to those who are patient enough to withstand the current pessimism and attentive enough to recognize the signs of market change. The move will be parabolic when it finally occurs, but only for those who were already positioned during this building phase.
Total discouragement is, paradoxically, the greatest opportunity that precedes each altseason. Understanding this cycle is what separates winners from impulsive speculators.
