Kimbal Musk: the man behind the legend

Kimbal Musk is one of the most interesting figures in the family of tech magnates. The 52-year-old entrepreneur and billionaire, brother of Elon Musk, is known not only for his business connections but also for his active stance on social development and ecology. His distinctive style — a trademark cowboy hat — has made him a recognizable face among family members.

From the Zip2 Startup to Modern Influence

Kimbal Musk’s success story began long before his brother became known worldwide. Together with Elon, they founded Zip2, an innovative internet business software company. In 1999, the brothers sold this company to Compaq for an impressive sum of $307 million. This success was the first significant achievement for both entrepreneurs and opened doors for their future investment ventures.

Kimbal Musk’s net worth is currently estimated at around $700 million. A significant portion of his wealth is tied to owning about 0.04% of Tesla shares — a company that is currently one of the most valuable in the world. However, unlike his brother, Kimbal has chosen a more private path of development, focusing on charity and social projects.

Family Ties vs. Ideological Differences

Despite the apparent friendliness within the family, the Musk brothers sometimes have differing views. Recently, Kimbal posted a critical message on the social media platform X about trade policy: “Who would have thought that President Trump would impose the highest taxes in a generation? His tariff policy has created a permanent structural tax for American consumers.” This statement reflected his critical stance toward both the political course and Elon’s position, who supports a different political line.

However, such ideological disagreements do not sever family ties. The Musks, despite their differing viewpoints, remain a close and supportive family. Both brothers share deep roots in South Africa, where they were born in Pretoria.

Similarities, Differences, and Individuality

Kimbal and Elon are remarkably similar in appearance. Both have a distinctive square jaw, straight nose, and green eyes — features inherited from their mother, Maye. They also hold triple citizenship: South African, Canadian, and American. However, the main thing that distinguishes Kimbal from his famous brother is his loyalty to an iconic image: the cowboy hat has become his personal trademark.

The youngest sibling of the family, Tosca, 50, has also played an important role in the family story. All three children faced difficult circumstances in childhood, leading their mother, Maye, to decide to divorce in 1979 and start a new life. The family later moved to Canada and then to the United States, where the brothers found opportunities to realize their entrepreneurial potential and create companies that changed the landscape of modern technology.
