Listening to music can also be "clear and understandable": Apple Apple Music launches AI content provenance tags

Abstract generation in progress

IT之家 March 5 news: Tech media 9to5Mac published a blog post yesterday (March 4), reporting that Apple is rolling out “Transparency Tags” for the Apple Music platform, clearly indicating whether music assets use AI technology.

This new rule requires record labels and content distributors, when submitting new content to their platform in the future, to explicitly label whether creative elements such as music and cover art use artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

Citing the blog post, IT之家 reports that, to precisely define the scope of AI involvement, Apple has introduced four dedicated “Transparency Tags” (Transparency Tags), corresponding to the core creative elements of digital music content:

Artwork: Applicable to both static and dynamic images. Use this tag when the substantial parts of the album cover are generated by AI.

Track: Only available at the track level. After the substantial parts of the recording are generated by AI, label accordingly.

Composition: Use when the substantial parts of any musical works included in the track (such as lyrics or other composition components) are generated by AI.

Music Video: Applicable to music videos included with an album or released independently. When the substantial parts of the visual elements are generated by AI, that tag is required.

In the implementation details, Apple clearly states that the conditions that trigger these tags are that “the substantial parts of the content are created using AI.” At the same time, to accommodate complex modern music production workflows, the same piece of music content is allowed to use multiple different Transparency Tags in combination.

It is worth noting that Apple has not currently adopted mandatory machine-detection methods, but instead leaves the decision of “what counts as AI content” to each partner. This approach is highly similar to current industry-standard practices such as classifying music genres and filling out cast and crew metadata, giving creators and distributors considerable discretion.

Apple emphasizes that, as the entire music industry works to adapt to new creative possibilities brought by generative technologies, introducing these tags is a key first step the platform has taken. This move not only helps standardize content management on the platform, but also helps deliver greater content transparency to listeners.
