Why did AI and doctor-patient communication lead to emotional outbursts twice?

Recently, a real case from Xi’an disclosed by the China Judgments Online has sparked heated discussions: a mother born in the 1990s lost control of her emotions and destroyed hospital medical equipment after her child suffered a sudden allergic reaction to cefalexin during treatment, and subsequent communication with the hospital was unsuccessful, leading to her conviction for intentional property damage.

Recently, the People’s Court of Yanta District in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, heard this case. The mother, Wang (a pseudonym), born in the 1990s, experienced a medication allergy during her child’s hospitalization and, after failing to reach an agreement with the hospital, smashed equipment at the hospital’s nurse station twice, causing property damage of over 20,000 yuan. The court sentenced Wang to ten months in prison for intentional property damage, with a one-year probation.

On December 25, 2023, while Wang was hospitalized with her son, the child had an adverse reaction to cefalexin due to an allergy. After being rescued, the child was out of danger, but Wang, feeling agitated after unsuccessful negotiations with the hospital, destroyed some medical equipment at the nurse station.

As New Year’s Day approached, the hospital scheduled a meeting with Wang to address the matter on January 2, 2024. However, when Wang arrived at the hospital on the agreed date to discuss the issue, her emotions once again spiraled out of control due to the lack of cooperation and she smashed several devices including the LCD monitor, intelligent nursing screen, and mobile nursing PDA at the nurse station. The damaged items were valued at over 26,000 yuan. After the incident, Wang compensated the hospital for the property damage and received the hospital’s understanding. Additionally, the court found that Wang had voluntarily reported the incident on the day it occurred and provided truthful statements upon her arrival at the police station.

After the incident, the Xi’an Yanta District People’s Procuratorate filed a public prosecution against Wang for intentional property damage, recommending a sentence of ten months in prison, which could be eligible for probation.

On November 21, 2025, the Xi’an Yanta District People’s Court ruled in this case, sentencing Wang to ten months in prison for intentional property damage, with a one-year probation.
