After the storm, Australia's liquefied natural gas supply remains disrupted, and thousands are without power.
On Sunday, thousands of people in remote northwest Australia remained without power, and liquefied natural gas production continued to be hindered, more than a week after the Narelle storm system made landfall in the country.
Narelle was downgraded from a tropical cyclone on Saturday, but its impact on the liquefied natural gas plants operated by Chevron and Woodside has further exacerbated the global supply tightness caused by the ongoing Iranian war lasting a month.
After production was halted in Qatar due to damage from Iranian attacks, Australia has become the second-largest exporter of liquefied natural gas in the world.
Woodside Petroleum Australia stated on Sunday that there were no new developments regarding the situation. On Saturday, the company’s Karratha gas plant (the onshore processing facility for the Northwest Shelf project) was still offline due to the effects of Narelle, while production at the Pluto facility remained unaffected.
Chevron did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Sunday. The company stated on Saturday that it was working to restore production at the Gorgon and Wheatstone gas facilities affected by the shutdown caused by Narelle.
Gorgon is Australia’s largest liquefied natural gas export facility, with three production trains and an annual output of 15.6 million tons; Wheatstone has two production trains and an annual output of 8.9 million tons.
