Danish container shipping giant Maersk’s CEO Vincent Clerc stated that the company currently has 10 vessels stranded in the Persian Gulf, and if a ceasefire is achieved, it will take at least a week to 10 days to resume normal operations. Brokers report that over 100 container ships are currently stuck in the Gulf region. Fuel inventories for ships in some Asian ports are declining, and oil supply issues may limit the docking of container ships. “The longer the Strait remains closed, the more difficult it is for Asia to replenish its oil inventories,” Clerc said. If Maersk cannot obtain fuel in Asia, it will have to charter tankers to transport fuel in, and the additional costs will be reflected in higher freight rates. The daily charter rates for very large crude carriers are currently nearing historical highs, exceeding $400,000.
