The FTSE 100 (^FTSE) fell on Tuesday morning, as US president Donald Trump’s new 10% tariff took effect, with artificial intelligence (AI) disruption concerns also in focus.

Trump announced the 10% global tariff rate on Friday, just hours after the US Supreme Court ruled his previous broad-based duties unlawful.

The president then threatened on Saturday to raise his new tariff to 15%, but has yet to formally implement this rate. Bloomberg reported that the White House is working on a formal order that will raise the global tariff rate to 15%.

Trump has implemented the 10% tariff rate using authority under section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, which allows the president to set these duties for up to 150 days.

Jim Reid, global head of macro research and thematic strategy at Deutsche Bank (DBK.DE), said: “Remember that Trump’s delivering the state of the union address tonight, so it’s possible we might get a better sense of the next steps on tariffs.”

AI disruption concerns also remained in the spotlight, after Anthropic’s latest AI tool announcement weighed on stocks in IT consulting in Monday’s session. The company is set to host a key event featuring product updates and demonstrations of new features later on Tuesday.
