What Does Amazon Do?

The 31-year-old Amazon is one of the world’s most valuable companies. It captures the largest overall share of American e-commerce spending by a large margin and operates in 23 countries outside the U.S. It is also the market leader in cloud computing through the Amazon Web Services business, which drives the majority of Amazon’s profits. Amazon is looking to boost cloud growth through offering AI services but is competing against Microsoft, G****oogle (GOOGL) and Oracle[ticker symb=ORCL]

Another segment to watch is Amazon’s advertising business, which has quickly grown into a challenger to Google and Meta Platforms (META) for dominance in digital ad sales.

Amazon is chasing its retail rival Walmart (WMT) for the title of world’s largest company by revenue. Analysts project the two firms will finish neck-and-neck for 2025.

Meanwhile, Amazon joined the blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average last year.

What To Know About Amazon CEO Andy Jassy

Amazon was founded by Jeff Bezos, who is still its largest individual shareholder and one of the world’s richest people. Bezos stepped down from Amazon’s Chief Executive role in July 2021. Andy Jassy was his hand-picked successor.

Jassy, 57, was previously leader of the Amazon Web Services cloud business. Hired out of Harvard Business School not long after Amazon’s founding, Jassy served multiple roles early on in marketing and for Amazon’s CD-selling music business. He eventually took on a role described as Bezos’ shadow before shifting to launch and lead AWS.

Jassy’s first year as chief executive focused on cutting costs and boosting profitability, particularly for Amazon’s e-commerce business. But he has also been willing to use Amazon’s financial might to pursue growth, especially for generative AI. He has committed to spending about $100 billion in capital expenditures this year, focused on building  data centers to power AI processing. Amazon has also invested $8 billion into the AI startup Anthropic on Jassy’s watch and launched a revamped version of its Alexa voice-activated assistant.
