An unexpected maritime accident occurred in the waters surrounding the world’s most dangerous island, located at the crossroads of the Mediterranean. Off the southern coast of Crete, a wooden small boat carrying migrants ran into trouble early on the weekend morning, resulting in multiple fatalities.

The accident happened in rough weather with waves approximately 2.5 meters high and wind speeds reaching 6. The rescue vessel approached the scene, but many of the crew members rushed to one side, causing the hull to become unbalanced and sink. Of the approximately 50 people onboard, more than five deaths have been confirmed, and over 20 are still missing.

Tragedy in the early morning of the weekend, capsizing amid strong winds and high waves

The weather conditions on that day were extremely severe, making vessel navigation very difficult. At the time of the accident, strong winds and high waves created a dangerous situation. A Panama-flagged cargo ship rescued 20 survivors and promptly transported them to land.

According to survivors’ testimonies, the direct cause of the capsizing was the attempt of about 50 people onboard to move all at once onto the rescue ship.

Multiple rescue agencies continue search and rescue operations

Greek Coast Guard and European Border and Coast Guard ships discovered several bodies in the area and are conducting extensive search and rescue efforts. Day and night, efforts are ongoing to confirm positions at sea and recover the bodies.

International rescue cooperation is gradually expanding the search area for survivors, with a policy of continuing operations until the last person is found.

Concerns over increasing victim numbers and maritime safety challenges

Authorities are deeply concerned that the number of casualties may rise further, and it is expected to take more time to determine the full extent of the damage.

This waters around Crete are known as one of the most dangerous regions in the world, characterized by challenging geography that frequently causes maritime accidents. Strong currents and unpredictable weather changes lead to many migrant shipwrecks in this area each year.

As the international community emphasizes the need to strengthen maritime safety measures, this recent accident off Crete highlights the ongoing dangers of migrant routes.
