This year, I went back to my hometown for the New Year and chatted with relatives and neighbors. I found that gambling is quite common in both the county town and the countryside, with the main participants being people born in the 80s and 90s. These gamblers often bet large amounts. I heard of several young people from the same village who last year accumulated huge gambling debts, ranging from over 200,000 to more than 1 million yuan. Most of them borrowed from relatives and friends, and some even took out online loans to pay off their debts. They work in the county town or run small businesses. For them, hundreds of thousands of yuan is not a small sum. Given the current economic downturn, their incomes are unstable, and I find it hard to understand why they still participate in such high-stakes gambling.
