I just saw @aonma's article "Upward: Transferring Innovation to the Application Layer" while scrolling through Twitter, which gave me some new insights into the current development of Web3.

Blockchain infrastructure has indeed come a long way. From Bitcoin and Ethereum to various L2s, stablecoins, modular solutions, and zero-knowledge proofs, these technologies have made blockchain faster, cheaper, more scalable, and easier to interact with other systems. However, the problem is that these technological upgrades alone are not enough. New L1s or L2s emerge every day, but there are still not enough applications that genuinely concern users, and Web3 has yet to become "the internet that everyone can use."

Many protocol teams have also realized that without applications that users like, innovation at the infrastructure level yields increasingly limited returns. So they started developing applications themselves, using their own technology to give it a try first, and showcasing what it can do to the world. This is a good thing, but @Zachary14818302 pointed out that it's still not enough.

The reason is that without a unified abstraction layer, the entire ecosystem remains fragmented, poorly composable, and offers a subpar user experience, making it difficult for developers to build applications smoothly. In other words, today’s Web3 is much like early personal computers: the hardware is powerful, but there is no operating system, making it hard for ordinary users and developers to get started, with a high barrier to entry.

In this context, the upward concept proposed by Anoma is quite interesting. It is not another chain, but rather provides a unified application layer, moving innovation from the infrastructure layer to the application layer. This way, developers do not have to worry about the underlying chain constantly changing and can focus on creating applications that users like; users can also enjoy a unified and simple experience across different chains. This approach can help blockchain move towards a more mature stage.

Zach also mentioned that crypto innovation is hitting a bit of a ceiling right now. If we only play the game of improving hardware on-chain, we won't win. The real way to impress the world is to create applications that users love, providing a truly alternative experience to the traditional internet. In other words, we need bold ideas, even moonshot-level goals.

I strongly agree with Zach's point in this article: the core issue of Web3 is not that the technology is insufficient, but rather the fragmentation of the ecosystem, poor user experience, and the lack of useful applications. Anoma's abstract layer concept is very similar to installing an operating system on the blockchain, making it easy for both developers and users to use.

I think that if Web3 wants to truly popularize, there must be more solutions like Anoma that serve applications with technology, rather than the other way around. The goal of innovation should not be to endlessly stack infrastructure, but to transform technology into products that users truly need and are willing to use.

In short, the next step for Web3 is not to create chains, but to develop applications that users love, allowing the entire ecosystem to mature. Only by moving upward is it possible to break through.
