#WHCADinnerShootingIncident Shots Fired at WHCA Dinner: Trump Evacuated, Gunman Subdued
The Incident: Salad Course Turns to Chaos
On the evening of April 25, 2026, the White House Correspondents' Association (WHCA) Annual Dinner at the Washington Hilton Hotel took a terrifying turn. President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and several cabinet members were in attendance at the media industry's premier gala.
Around 8:30 PM, as guests had just finished their salad course, several loud bangs shattered the celebratory atmosphere.
CNN veteran reporter Wolf Blitzer, who had stepped out to use the restroom moments before the shooting, became an accidental eyewitness — finding himself just feet away from the gunman.
"When I walked back toward the ballroom entrance, I suddenly heard gunfire in the hallway, right next to me. Immediately, a Secret Service agent tackled me to the ground, covering my entire body with his. I heard at least five or six shots — very loud, echoing in the enclosed space," Blitzer recounted.
He described the gunman carrying a "very, very lethal weapon" and noted he was only "a few feet away" from the attacker. "My first thought was — 'Is he trying to shoot me?'"
The Gunman Identified
The shooter has been identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, a California resident. Allen had checked into the Washington Hilton earlier in the day. He was armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives.
According to law enforcement, Allen has no prior criminal record and was not previously on their radar.
Secret Service Response: Swift Evacuation & Neutralization
Witnesses described a rapid and professional response from Secret Service agents. Multiple agents rushed onto the stage, shouting "Get down! Get down!" as they physically whisked Trump and other VIPs to safety.
The gunman was subdued within minutes. Early reports indicate no fatalities among attendees, though one security personnel sustained minor injuries.
Aftermath & Investigation
The WHCA dinner was immediately suspended. Attendees were held inside the ballroom for over two hours as law enforcement swept the building. The FBI has taken over the investigation, looking into Allen's motive, digital footprint, and potential connections.
President Trump was taken to a secure location and later returned to the White House. In a brief statement issued overnight, the President thanked the Secret Service for their "incredible bravery and speed."
Reactions
WHCA President Eugene Daniels said, "Tonight was a stark reminder that the journalists and public servants in this room are not immune to the violence plaguing our nation. We are grateful for the first responders."
The White House confirmed that the President will address the nation regarding the incident tomorrow morning.
Conclusion
What began as a night celebrating journalism and democracy nearly ended in tragedy. The swift actions of the Secret Service and local law enforcement likely saved dozens of lives. As Washington reels from the shock, the focus now turns to understanding the motive behind Cole Tomas Allen's attack — and how to prevent the next one.
