CME positions drop to a 14-month low! Institutional arbitrage games are no longer sustainable

Brothers, the smart money on Wall Street is quietly pulling out.

The data just came out: CME Bitcoin futures open interest has fallen to $8.41 billion, hitting a 14-month low, with daily trading volume also dropping below $3 billion, liquidity is drying up quickly.

What’s going on? The previous institutional strategy of "basis trading"—buying spot ETFs with the left hand, shorting futures with the right, earning an annualized return of 15%-20%—now this yield has been squeezed down to around 5%. The problem is, the risk-free rate on US Treasuries is already 4.5%, after deducting funding costs and counterparty risk, it’s basically a break-even.

Institutions aren’t in the business of charity; if there’s no profit, they naturally pull out.

A deeper change is that the position of CME’s top player has been overtaken by some An An, marking the first time since the end of 2023. The era of simple arbitrage with high returns may truly be gone for good.

The takeaway for retail investors is simple: leverage is retreating, the futures market is deleveraging, and chasing longs at this time should be carefully considered. Institutions are shifting to spot, and you’re still opening 20x contracts?
