I just finished watching this documentary on Netflix about fraud in the crypto world, and I have to share it. Ray Trapani's story is a truly instructive example of how easily the entire market can be deceived when proper oversight is lacking.

Ray Trapani was a drug addict looking to get rich quickly. He noticed that cryptocurrencies are a virtually unregulated field and decided to exploit that. He created Centra Tech, initially just copying another website. Then he did something really brazen — he made a CEO profile with his grandfather's photo and claimed to be a Harvard graduate. It sounds absurd, but it worked.

Ray Trapani managed to convince the entire industry of his lies. He started running advertising campaigns funded with money collected from investors. The project gained momentum and even attracted celebrities — former boxer Floyd Mayweather and producer DJ Khaled began supporting Centra Tech. This added credibility to the scam.

What’s worse? Ray Trapani and his team raised $170 million. Instead of developing the project, they spent the money on luxury cars, vacations, and parties. They did practically nothing for the investors. For a while, they got away with it, but eventually users started asking questions and criticizing the project.

The SEC caught wind of it and charged Ray Trapani and his associates with illegal promotion of the ICO and hiding payments from Centra Tech from followers. The supporting celebrities did not disclose that they received money for promotion. Ray Trapani and others admitted guilt, were convicted, and sent to prison.

What strikes me? How simple the scam was, and yet how effective. It shows that in crypto, you have to be extremely cautious. I recommend watching this documentary on Netflix — it’s really educational. You can see all the details of the lack of market oversight, how easy it is to create a fake project, and how important it is to verify facts before investing anywhere. It’s a lesson everyone interested in entering the crypto world should know. It teaches us how to distinguish honest projects from scams and what to watch out for.
